More Information about Longmont

Named for the awe-inspiring Longs Peak visible from the city, Longmont enjoys a unique Colorado history, in that gold never played a part in its inception. Instead, a group from Chicago purchased land with the purpose of creating the first planned community in the state. Memberships in the community were sold and the money was used to build the Town Hall.

These determined souls that incorporated the town in 1871 left a legacy that has carried on in spite of the town being forced to reinvent itself after floods and high winds blew away the existing agricultural economy that had once supported it. The 1990s brought renewed growth when IBM and GE Energy built headquarters here, which in turn, attracted other tech companies heralding in a revival of a healthy city economy.

Recreation and outdoor adventure abound, perhaps inspired by the average 300 plus days of sunshine a year. Longmont enjoys the distinction of being one of the top destinations for skydiving in the nation, and the strong sense of community thrives via local activities like the Longmont Symphony Orchestra and musical chorale.
